Attack.

They came from everywhere the opening fire from hundreds of machine guns with the crack of rifles sounding as if they wanted to drown out the staccato barks of the Heavy Ack, Ack Aircraft guns. The attack was not unexpected we had seen the strange aircraft suddenly dropping through the clouds. Telephones were overheating as call after call came through from the civilian population. Radio and television sent warnings every five minutes warning the general public to stay indoors. Children were sent home from schools. On every street corner Soldiers set up machine gun posts. Some of the more daring took pots of tea with sandwiches to the soldiers. If there is going to be trouble then all wanted to get mixed up in the defence of our world.

I walked to the local Police station and volunteered to be either a messenger or they could give me a firearm I have had Army training and would be useful for helping where help is needed. I was issued with a rifle and twenty rounds of ammunition a revolver that fired five shots. My first errand was to deliver a message to the military command in charge of our area. Here I was given two bandoliers with pouches each pouch held rifle ammunition nine bullets in each pouch as I went out through the gate a solder handed me a bag filled with hand grenades. I was well equipped and strode back to the police station with another message. It was here that I first saw the attackers, small creatures similar to our own children. If they were not so heavily armed with deadly weapons that they fired at every thing that moved I would have stopped and asked them what this invasion was all about. The next projectile whistled past my head. I dropped down to one knee and aiming my rifle I emptied my rifles magazine and quickly reloaded. These invaders did not bother to take cover. How many I was responsible for having shot I do not know, others were firing shot after shot at these small creatures. The bubbles kept coming through the clouds the firing of the Anti-aircraft guns was the background music to all of this death going on all around me. Bubble after bubble crashed into each other in their frantic efforts to escape the shells from the anti aircraft guns. There must have been millions of these bubbles over the area of Great Britain and Ireland. Nothing was reported from the continent of Europe. Most of the worlds Naval vehicles were heading for Great Britain and its Islands. Soon Battle ships, aircraft carriers were in British territorial waters. Now aircraft from Great Britain and the continent of Europe were mixing in with fierce aerial battles, Bubble after Bubble fell to the ground or into the sea. Suddenly all firing stopped. The clouds opened and I saw huge machines speeding up into space the invaders whoever they were hurried off into space to return where they came from. No one from the invaders was taken prisoner each one killed himself. Apart from the strange clothing and the weapons that they carried we learned nothing at all from them. This invasion from space was to go down in history as the creatures from space invasion. Such an invasion could not happen again space ships are many that surround the earth and the moon and most of the other planets anywhere near to our World. Yes I too received a Medal to commemorate the voluntary action I took during the invasion. The medal is somewhere in one of my kitchen drawers. I wanted to give it to some of the boys in our street. They did not want the medal, if you would like it I will try to find it but you will have to wait I am very busy again with an invasion of another type. My kitchen has been invaded by ants, thousands of them have taken over my kitchen and the ground floor, Keep smiling Bern.
