Church Choir.

Sunday evening, I had nothing to do; I decided to go for a walk. A few streets away from my home there stood an old Church. More out of nosiness than any religious ground I walked into the Church. Taking a seat I let my gaze wander around the Church. This could have been any of the Churches that I had previously been in. Slowly people came in to the Church. I was pleased that I had not taken one of the seats in front of the Church.

The choir came in singing a hymn, I recognised it straight away, it was the hymn that all of the children at my old school sang at the end of each school day. Now the day is over evening drawing nigh. The choir gave of its best but badly needed a leader. The Vicar came in carrying his hymnbook. Crossing himself at the Altar he addressed the Churchgoers. Hymn number, I did not catch the number as one of the churchgoers started to cough.

People opened their hymnbooks and the choir started off with a very well known hymn. Onward Christian Soldiers. For some unknown reason I decided to help the choir. I have a good powerful voice and the choir on hearing my voice sang as they had never sung before. After the Hymn the Vicar read from the Holy Bible. Then he gave a sermon; all of those in the Church were sinners. There was still time to change and for us all to become true worshippers of God. A few Amen’s were shyly called from the Churchgoers. Then the Hymn Abide with me fast falls the eventide. I took over the choir more or less and this great old hymn was sung as it had never been sung in this Church before.

Too late I should have left the Church during that last Hymn but somehow I felt I could not leave the choir on their own. First the choir came to the pew where I had sat during the evening service. Then the Vicar came I was asked to join the choir in fact to be the choir leader. I told all of these hopeful people that I was not a religious person. I love singing and would be pleased to help them by coming to choir practice. But I could not be a member of the Vicars congregation. I only came into the Church this evening because I was bored. No, Choir practice yes but Church Services I could in no way be coerced into going to regular Church Services.

The choir has greatly improved and I attend choir practice Tuesdays and Fridays but I have not been to a Church Service since that Fateful Sunday when I was bored and wandered into the old Church.
