Big Dream

Julie’s big dream was to travel to Europe. She dreamed of walking through Champs-Élysées, visiting the Colosseum and shopping in many cities of that far away country. However, Julie’s family had always struggled with money, they were not poor but his dad had a habit of drinking and most of their money was spent on his vices. But Julie promised herself that one day she would fulfill her dream of traveling to Europe.

That summer, she decided that she would start working so she could begin saving some money. She applied for a job as a waitress in a local diner which she really liked, she wouldn’t get paid a lot but she believed that great things took time, so she didn’t mind spending a long time saving the money she needed for her trip. She worked from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m everyday and she made extra hours whenever she could afford it. Julie didn’t mind being absent to some of her friend’s plans, she was determined on her goals and she was sure she wouldn’t quit until she fulfilled hers.

Julie enjoyed going to work, she liked meeting new people at the diner everyday and she even got to make some new friends. Sarah was an 18 year old teenager who was also working at the diner for the summer, Julie really liked working around her and she was happy to have a friend she could talk to when she got bored at the diner. Sarah had already gone to Europe when she was 16 so she told Julie everything she needed to know about it. Julie loved listening to her stories and she imagined that it was her who was having a picnic in front of the Eiffel Tower, visiting the Holocaust memorial, going to the museums and even meeting some handsome spanish guys. Throughout the summer all Julie could do was planning her trip, she made a detailed calendar about her daily plans and activities. She would leave her town on monday evening, so she would arrive to the Charles de Gaulle airport in the morning, that way she would not waste any time. After that she would head to her hotel, and she was planning on taking tourist tours on every city she visits, that way she would go to every important place and she would get to know most part of the cities.

Julie knew this was going to be an expensive trip so a month after summer started she decided that she would also start working as a pet caretaker in the afternoons and she would babysit every evening. She was very excited because she was earning a lot of money and she was now sure that she would be able to pay for her trip. And so, the summer days went by and hard-working Julie was getting even more excited as summer came to an end.

Finally, the last day of summer arrived, and it was time for Julie to count her savings. She waited until the end to count her money to make the progress even more exciting. However, she was sure she got all the money she needed, she knew all her hard work must’ve paid off. Julie was feeling nervous but eager at the same time, so she began. One dollar, one dollar and fifty cents. Two more quarters went by so now she had 2 dollars. An hour later she finished counting the money, she could not believe how much she had gained that summer. She finally had the money she needed in her hands and was making her dream come true. Julie felt extremely proud of herself, she couldn’t help it but to shout in happiness. Her mom came rushing into her room afraid that something bad had happened to Julie, only to find her screaming on top of a money pile, but she knew what that meant, it meant Julie was going to Europe.
