I wept in honest grief when Karloff died:

but my once affable, trustable fifth grade peers

(who would later use words like "faggots" and "queers")

repeated the sad news woth celebratory jeers,

and I again, right in that classroom, cried.

Remembered, this huge emotional expense

(even in my old age the horror does not fail)

became my first, and not last, experience

with the grim knowledge of human bretrayal.
