Circa 1976: Smirk Of Irony

My father hated

Japan's culture; and, also,

you, BlueLevels (though

not Japanese).  Ironic:
I write of you in Tanka.

Author's Notes/Comments:

My father was an excellent provider; emotionally distant; and prejudiced toward the Japanese, and never satisfied with my choice of friends of any ethnic descent.

That was my guess as well,

That was my guess as well, until he disclosed to me, late in his life, that it was more his battleship experience on the Nevada, as a gunner's mate, during Kamikaze attacks.  My father also learned, during a reunion of his Marine unit when recently declassified material was disclosed, that he would have been in the first invasion force on the main island of Japan, and was expected to be slaughtered in that action.  The death certificates for everyone in his unit had already been filled out.  On the third day prior to invasionj, the ship stopped dead in the water, coasted into a complete turnabout, and began heading away from Japan ad such speed that the ship, he said, was actually shaking.  This was because the deisgnera od the atomic bomb had overestimated the blast radius, and the Pentagon feared that the ship might have been exposed to the blast.  But thanks for commenting, I sure to appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing that, and

Thanks for sharing that, and for the compliment about my father's story.  Despite my many disputes with him, I am very proud of his wartime service, and, later, of his accomplishments as a road surveyor and traffic technician.
