Son Of The Father Of Lies

Son of the Father of Lies,

in for one helluva surprise,

someday before the Father's throne for trial:
you were never a faithful believer---

just a shrill and garrulous deceiver---

always a prudish, smarmish accuser

of Christian brethren, and an abuser

of Scriptures, hoping to make denial

of others' presence in Paradise.

But God will answer your self-righteous sham,

to show you that He does give a damn.
Before you can even object or inquire,

you will take a dive into Lake Fire.

The last of Heaven your nervous gaze will see

(if one might hope, and, hoping, surmise)
will be Matthew Shepard's beautiful eyes,

before you start to sear eternally.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Cf. John 8:44; Revelation 12:10, 20:11, 15.  The sixteenth line contains an allusion to T. S. Eliot's poem, The Hollow Men.
