At An Educational Moment

I visited a so-called "high" church.  Suffering with gout,

I limped in on a cane, nor could move easily about.

"Don't kneel down," said the celebrant.  "We shall not stop the prayer,

"not even briefly, to assist if you get stuck down there."

He had said we were friends, but his foremost priority

was the performance of uninterrupted liturgy.

I have been glad that I do not share his theology

which seems not quite Christian, nor courteous, nor "fatherly."

I am happy to be a Baptist, with soul liberty,

to worship without ritual constraints held rigidly.

Christ spoke about that sometimes as he toured through Galilee's

towns where He spoke against the customs of the Pharisees.
