Through my life's pathways I had hoped to strut---

huge harvests, full barns, and a well-filled, well-fed gut;

to gather around myself the deluge of a glut.

But Christ has prepared a different path for me,

and cleared (and is clearing) away each obstacle

strewn about or hidden there by Vanity,

that multinymic monster also known as Pride

so that my always needy, always stumbling soul

receives its fair share of Humility,

to remain in Him through Faith and therefore qualified

(through His merit alone) to join Him in Eternity.
