Black And White

Civil rights are not black and white

Neither given or taken, they

Exist inalienably mixed

In a subtle shade of gray.

Juxtaposed in liberty

Predisposed with wielded knife

To defend as all have fought

At cost of one’s own life.

When we have been called to colors,

It is with heart, not with eyes,

To view bold crimson blood in

Dignity of sacrifice.

Let’s stand for those in repose

Who stood brave prepared to fight

What they attained for the gray

Will defend both black and white.
