At A Woman's Concern For A Soldier Come Home [Revised]

What happened last month?  Some strange chill has curbed

your customary homecoming delight.

Even your slumber last night was disturbed:

and more than once you sat straight up and cried

aloud.  Your fidgets kept me up all night---

not quite the usual experience.

Listen:  you were not ordered to decide

the details of the guilt or innocence:

others had to deliver evidence;

and others had to draw a firm conclusion.

Your duty was, merely, the execution

of sentence.  You have never shrunk from death:

and many are the men you crucified,

So how has this Jesus of Nazareth

provoked such fierce conniptions in your head?

The man is---if I may remind you---dead.

The original had some glaringly silly errors in it, so I have revised the text and reposted it after removing the original.
