THE PROPOSAL

I heard the words across the phone line.

“Will you spend the rest of your life with me?”

She said with joy in her voice and a seriousness I had never heard before.

Giggling I asked her, is that supposed to be a proposal?

In a deeper more serious voice she responded, yes.

My response in an animated yet excited voice.

Yes, yes.  It would be my honor.

Our conversation carried on.

Are you okay?

Be careful due to news reports.

I know you’re a medic, but take care of you first then take care of everyone else.

In a brief moment I had to make sure I had heard what she had said to me earlier.

I stated, it was cute what you said earlier about me spending the rest of my life with you.

Were you serious?

Her reaction firm and staunch. Will you spend the rest of your life with me?

Although she may not have known it, tears of joy welled up in my eyes as I took breath and said to her. Yes.  It would be my honor.

I asked her to let me know the instant anything happened on her trip. She agreed.

Time whisked away so fast that soon the final I love yous of the conversation were said and I had time today to look back and realize that last night I was given a proposal and fir the first time in my life accepted it without hesitation, but it felt so very good to have it.

The proposal.
