Global Warming Mythology

A New View

.

I just read an article published in November 2012 by Billy Larsson titled "Our psychology makes us neglect the victims of climate change". The slant of the article was from the perspective of psychological analysis of mindsets across the industrialized technical world and the ledaers of industries who should feel guilt at what they are doing. Larsson evoked the notion that humans are killing people with the decisions they make: trip to sun and fun in a jet, that pulling all of the fossil fuels out of the ground and basically most human behaviors will kill humanity.

.

The article then  goes on espousing many other non-specific examples of how human behavior and ethics must change to address the lack of reforestation and force folks to adopt a universal political will to think 1000 years into the future. Most people cannot plan beyond the week. Top of the agenda was a repeated theme - basically, those who embrace the danger to the future are marginalized as they are under attack by the fuel industry, thereby losing their media blitz of informing the world to the impending dangers and consequences of unethical psychology about environmental issues. I, obviously, was not the audience this artical wished to reach. I am convinced we are doomed. The stupidly optimistic are in denial.

.

Guilt tripping is not going to win many arguments, nor is simply stating that we are ethically bound to insure continuation of life in the future. My ethics, as that of most people, as stated in the article, are dominated by my comfort and the things I enjoy because of my endeavors to be happy. Ethics vs happiness or the accumulation of wealth or the simple turning away from issues that will not affect the earth until 2050 or 2138, is a weak stance against deadly and effective oppositional forces. Firstly, mega corporations did not become market share dominant by being ethical. An idea keeps creeping into my thinking about Trump supporters, most of them are not concerned with ethical issues either; lying, cheating, woman bashing, destroying reputations, withdrawing from climate accords with major nations, all fall in the unethical arena of psychology. They ain't gonna change. Secondly, we, as humans, have been taught to admire the mildly or irrelevant negativity resulting from accepting business politics that create jobs and increase our comfort levels. Big coup d'etat advertising campaign slogans: "It is the american way!" and "We must protect our way of life!" We have done that. We will continue to do so.

.

There is no room for screaming "The world is at risk and we are all gonna die!" Psychologically, we feel the problem is too big and can not be altered, when it can. We downsized the tobacco industry with a full out campaign aimed at the next generation (the Millennials) but the article did not talk about radicalizing the message and aiming it at who comes next. It was polite in tone and uninspiring - psychologically I do not feel ethics, I feel about choking on bad air because of pollution or going outside and burning up because the ambiant heat index is above the comfort levels I had come to expect my life entire. I too am in denial and have been conditioned to accept my ability to buy stuff without feeling guilty or "ethical" about it.

.

Preachers should be sermonizing big time the ills of fossil fuels - talk about an evangelical enlightened mission for Christ or Buddah or Lao Tzu. Universal boycotting of high carbon signature products is what is needed to alter ethical mind emphasis at a time when the competition for "mind control" is a highly well financed human industry folks. I can not afford a Lincoln but after seeing Matthew McConaughey behind the wheel, I can see me there. Have you seen his house? The man's interior decorator has class! The images are mind altering. Like that. I once saw a black child dead with bugs the size of my fists all over him seeking sustenance and I was shocked into awareness and ethical rightness about hunger and the lack of water in poor nations or post war syndromes. Ecological evangelicals need some of those kinds of images to back up their plea to alter one's ethics. Soft sell will not work.

.

Distant predictions and scientific scandal mongering is not a solution and most people are concerned about eating and having fun now, today, or planned in the imminent future. Consumerism was evoked in the article; since 1850 the advent of the Industrial Revolution, buying without realizing the consequences that our purchase will kill people or cause children to starve on the other side of the planet is not a part of the psychological marketing strategies of humongous sellers of high carbon signature products. Graphic examples work on human motivational matrices: We must give up our current way of life to preserve existence for humans in the future. 50 to 100 years form now they will be dead and the virtues of selfishness have supplied us with the ability to think of ourselves only, no one else, not even our descendents. What an effective Capitalistic campaign that was and still is. Advertising: Forget your problems, the world's problems. Forget about the future, live well and be excrutiatingly happy today! Move over Orwell 1994.

.

Living with a lot less is what was posited in the article; as effective as saying the problems of the world will be instantly solved if everyone simply started loving everyone. Nice notion, soothing and dismissive of the huge catastrophe we are facing world-wide, but nonetheless, a nice way to avoid the topic.

.

Ice at the poles melt and no one tells the leadership to believe it AND act to diminish these events. Immediate concerns like increasing the military budget supplant any decisions to tackle something not in front of us, visibly. Hence, we can easily dismiss the expenditures of tax dollars to deal with changes about to affect our lifestyle inaulterably. China and Russia and little bity North Korea are dominating our focus and they are where resources of time, energy, usa dollars, and media blitzing are allocated. The impeachment inquiry, now the impeachment, has captured our ethics currently and there is less room to consider how many resources have been stripped from efforts to irradicate or stop producing massive carbon dioxide and many other global warming gases that are being dumped in our breathable atmosphere. For those who posit that co2 is a helpful molecule, too much of anything is not a good thing. Balance is required and that option frequently eludes us as humans.

.

It is long term thinking, and less the ethics of global warming, that needs to change. Both happening is just idealistic. People need ot be hit over the head with the need to change. Pain causes change, not nice articles about soft topics most humans can not grasp or want to grasp. Psychology is not a popular word among the discussions at the lunch table or with drinks at the bar. Stop delivering sandwiches and soup or alcohol and notice will be taken. Start by closing all the liquor stores. Radical change requires radical measures. Like cigarettes, we can lose the liquor industry too. Our liver health willk rise along with longevity of, well, everyone everywhere. Knowing that drugs are addictive is still affecting millions because no one has made it a number one priority. The fossil fuels are running out - fracking is destabilizing the techtonic plates, and still we seek more land and labor to produce a substance that is singly the culprit in any discussion of future existence ending without cure or succor. Reference The Man Who Fell To Earth (David Bowie movie) and the loss of water from the planet he escaped to come here, a water world. Death by environment is what the "alarmists" should be tolling, not change your psychological ethics. That is a consequence of shutting off the electricity and water flowing to households. Grounding planes everywhere would be a spark to ignite the fires of ethical psychological redirection, assuredly. At what point do radicals start bombing cars and motorcycles, trucks, and lawnmowers? Hmmmm...That day is on a not too distant horizon. Recycling should replace...statements that include the word "should".

.

No way we will allocate resources sufficient enough to address altering the psychology of buyers in a world dominated by conglomerates dedicated to controling the buying habits of millions. It does not create wealth - putting an end to wealth generating industries is a hard sell at best and a formula for another kind of economic disaster. We gasp as the thought! Example: Media reports major famine or bombings or political death causing oppression, then show people walking carrying their accumulated stuff wearing Nikes and designer jeans and Gloria Vanderbilt or major sports team tees. The irony is that people faced with homelessness and loss of homeland are fleeing for their lives as the best clad immigrant populations anywhere. (Reference The Kerner Report that got it right but nobody listened). Resources are declining, nations are competing for cheap labor and land and places to sink more oil wells. Windmills should pock the horizon. To money makers, people are secondary. The state of the earth is a tertiary concern to global buyers and sellers of goods and services that filter money and resources anywhere but into the pockets of the consumer or the effort to keep the consumer healthy and alive in the future.

.

The days of the ragged, dirty, and hungry/thirsting ragtaggled flight victims have dramatically changed. What happened to photo-journalism as a way to alter mindsets about the horrors people are experiencing. It is difficult to look at the causes of global warming when they create really great paying jobs and allow for everyone, including the downtrodden, to wear top of the line fashions. That everyone wants what "we" have in the highly toxic countries of "the West" is what viewers take away; not "Oh, they are starving because the lifestyle I live is killing their ability to grow crops or have potable water and wealth enough to have a huge military like us!." We are naive and basically stupid. That is the ethical dilemma - How do we change the minds of those with wealth to give it up for the future that will inevitably continue to kill off millions of humans and other ecological system denizens daily? We watch and say and feel nothing about now extinct species. I is not popular. Not a high priority to report at the top of the news: Elephant population nearing extinction. Human population nearing extinction - no, not glossy enough. When it bleeds it will lead. Aw shucks!

.

Apocolyptic movies and novels have not altered the ethics of humans. Weaker but wiser is the norm - prophets have been descrying that one for centuries and no one is listening even wrapped in holy cloth and text. I sit writing on a comptuer with an enormous carbon signature descrying the industries that created it as killing the future; talk about psychologically dominated in a totality of  for my descendents. These are the conundrums that create impossibilities for solving "the problem". Simply not believing in the crisis looming is passive and acceptable to most humans since getting their next meal is dominating their immediate psychological output, not the ethics of over mining fossil fuels from the bowels of the earth to kill off homo sapiens ultimately. How do you convince a starving chikld or a rich person that they are the result or cause of the crisis. Denial is at epic proportios as is our continued practice of no educating folks to espouse critical thinking and longer term strategies about the continued existence of humans.

.

We are standing on the edge of a very deep chasm that if we fall we will die. Soon we will be sailing down toward absolute annihilation and screaming, "Who did this to us?" Oh, the payback climate scientists will enjoy listening to those wails of despair and doom then. Cassandra syndrome, the prophet who was not believed that Troy was about to fall, owns counterpart in the warnings from the scientific community on sea level rise, ice caps melting, fires burning globally, and record temperatures and weather conditions never before seen planet-wide. Add animal species extermination, bore beetles, property losses in the billions from fire and floods, loss of land for crops, and mass migrations of entire countries - yeah, we are in for it both hands down afuture!

.

Ethics are not going to change until computers are no longer manufactured, jet travel is banished, and whatever it is Exxon-Mobile is doing stops cars on the roads. Until planting trees is a high paying job, ethics will go hang. It is not the call to ethical behavior, rather the call to radical changes to force individuals to change their living habits and habitats. No more plastic production and removal of all plastics from manufacturing would be a start. See, radical. We put water in plastic bottles and the ethical mindset was that this was a good thing. Sad. The manufacturing of plastic is putting a gun to our heads and waiting for Russion Roulette to commence. Some plastics deteriorate toxically and quickly, others in a hundred years where toxcisity levels will begin to rise again. Unforseen? No. Profitable.

.

Cartoonists should be having a field day, media should start each broadcast with the catastrophes happening globally that are directly caused by the commercial lifestyle a small percentage of the earth's population embraces. Mass slaughters, shocking bloody stories are what have become a steady theme-the-viewers-want diet of competing for viewer and listener market share. Ethics and corporate goals (mostly to make money to provide continuance of the mission) do not mix well and never have, and never will. Cheapr is better, pollution factor is not a consideration if buyers will buy the thing made. As the mudslide creeps up to the door we will monitor the progress of the thing that will kill us, then hop in the SUV and hit the mall or find the thing life is unbearable without via Amazon.

.

Everyone is anxious about the changing climate - the weather patterns are no more catastrophic than in the past, so the psychology is that there is no danger yet. When Californians stampede Michigan and Colorado in search of land not on fire, perhaps a few more sheep will look up (John Brunner sci-fi novel reference). When the tap is turned and virus infected sludge comes out, mayby then a voice in the wilderness will be heard about the impending dangers of too much heat and not enough paying attention.

.

A few thoughts on global catastrophe and my changing belief that if I volunteer, it will have to be in the psychological mind changing of humans to prepare for their doom graphically with special effects and emotion altering sound that chills down past the underwear to the marrow of human bones. Courage is required, resources - big investments in altering the way we think about modernization and manufacturing is required, giving up lifestyle will be required. Fat chance that's gonna happen. They will have to pry my Dell desk top from my globally warmed flooded burned and scroched fingers before I stop buying stuff because I can afford it. I am a capitalists and if ever there was an argument against the dictacts of capitalism it is the damage it does to our future.

.

I'm just musing again about old articles that are sober and pedogogical and not very effective in solving the stated problems associated with glabal warming like the end of man and woman and child kind. The author needs a course in dialetices and how to be an effective writer of ecological spiel. We may need to refernce him later, when the creek rises.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I know, I promised no more political jargon or op eds. I keep thinking about dead babies thirsting to death at our Southern border and  kids separted from their beloveds and kids in cages and I am moved ethically, morally, and psychologically to write this kind of observation piece. Nothing really new here, just an attempt to awaken the sleeping ethic in the reader. Yeah, this ought to do that. :D - Lady A

We Are Reaping

More than our coping mechanism can process, Bishu. Even those who claim climate is changing naturally and not by human additives, are still concerned about the patterns emerging, flooding, fires, water rising. Believers and deniers will reap this particular whirlwind together world-wide.

I was reading about two kinds of fire - that like the last Ice Age will rage across the earth - man made fire and natural fires that keep the fire fuel in check. Skewed, we may see the fire next time. - Lady A -
