Our Conscious and Moral Imagination

Black Poetry

Toni Morrison

February 18, 1931 - August 5, 2019

The year President Obama presented

Toni Morrison, African American writer,

with the Presidential Award of Freedom.

She taught literature at the ivy leagues

and gave us wisdom by the bushel,

novel after novel.

And you read and read

and did not get it. It is worth

a Nobel Prize. Most who do not

read do not read what wins

a Nobel Prize for Literature.

At 88, she died surrounded by

family and her beloveds. Young black

writers look at the dredlocks, a

signature, all gray and ask

who was she? We proudly reply,

"She was us."
