I remember an absolute nothing

of hours spent safely tucked lucky

to have survived the absence of

duckies, tiny stuffed bears,

little wares from stores handed down.

.

I remember out-houses and kerosene

burning, soot in pipes, warming

feet to coal heat. Sights from the crib

are faded beyond recall, that’s all.

No matter, the oldest recollection

meant no one came.
