The Power Of Poetry

Vintage Words

Because it is a public form

and may work its way into the mind

of a twelve year old, you as poet

may not know what they

read and latch onto; what gem

of wisdom sparks into impression.

A seedling of hope may blossom

into a flower of magnificent span

or a pit of depression may cause

unalterable devastation to the mind

of the reader. You can not know

what you have done, but you keep

writing down what is on your mind

in hopes it helps and does no harm.

Like little messages in bottles

dropped on ocean waves or cast

into high breaker reefs, you

have no clue that what you meant

is what will be read and understood.

There are elements of magic in weaving

words. Live with it. Such is the poet's

curse and calling.
