January Rain

Cold descended on the Midwest

in January bringing the necessities

of heavy sweaters and thermo

underwear. Expecting snow to follow,

only a sound of spring on the eaves

and gutters until a glance outside

engenders disbelief.

Overcast has made the world dark

and the streets glisten like mirrors

as if black backed glass. A second

long gaze unveils small droplets

on wet concrete, the porch half dry

because of a protected entryway.

January is a month of high

and cold weather crystallized

and stashed against bare boughs,

like icing on hedge layers,

like a diamond flecked blanket

sparkling beneath a rarely seen

full winter moon.
