Mask

.

Easier to cut from wood
and carve than to fabricate
from the mind and don
like a hat to hide behind
as if a mental mask
was the same as a real one.
.
Cut and glued, painted
or cast and fired, a mask
dances between the unseen
and the seeable like a bird
in summer trees flickering
into existence and out
again.
.
The steps of the chisel,
the sway of the knife
choreographs the living well.
The old carver inspires,
informs, and inhales
this Masque of wood, until
the hour closes and the dance
ends.
