Grandfather.s Old Boots

Grandfather’s Old Boots.

I decided to clean out the attic, taking my Hoover and a dustpan and brush with a couple of dusters I went up the stairs to the attic. I have not cleaned the attic for a long time; in fact I hardly ever go up into the attic. Today I thought I would have a good clear out and started with the duster cleaning the dust from ages away from the old pieces of furniture. Next came the old chests and wooden tea chests holding the old bric a brac from a few hundred years. My Family had always put things into the attic just in case they might one day come in useful.

Dusting down one of the old wardrobes I must have caught the catch for the door of the wardrobe opened. Someone had in the past placed suits and shirts with ties of all patterns. I recognised my old school tie not how had that got up into the attic. Looking down to the floor of the wardrobe I saw a pair of boots. Taking the boots out of the wardrobe I noticed that they were very good condition. Hardly been worn I thought to myself. These boots will come in handy when I am working in the garden. I must say I was feeling pleased with myself on finding the boots.

I finished Hoovering the attic and took my cleaning things down stairs with the boots tucked under my arm. Putting the Hoover and the dustpan and brush back where they belonged; I threw the dusters in the basket that I use for putting the dirty washing in and took the boots into the kitchen. Looking inside one of the boots I saw a marker with the name of Joshua Shaw. I recognised the name it was my grandfathers name. Cleaning the boots with black boot polish I shone them up and I swear one could see ones face in the highly polished leather.

The following day after breakfast I tried on the boots they fitted me perfectly. Taking a few steps to the door. I felt very comfortable in the old boots of my Grandfather. Opening the back door I walked into the garden. The boots had a life of their own for instead of doing some gardening work the boots took me outside of the garden. How far I walked I do not know but I felt no tiredness. Normally after walking any long distance my legs and feet make themselves noticeable and I have aches and pains not very nice really. I managed to walk back to my house and take off the boots. Putting on my house slippers I made a cup of tea and switched on the radio to listen to the news forecast.

A couple of minutes after listening to the news a loud plop and Shamus my Leprechaun friend popped out of the wireless. After greeting me he told me that a pair of boots that he had made years ago from magic leather had been used. He had not heard from the boots for many years. I showed him the boots that were my grandfathers. Shamus recognised them immediately. “These are the boots I made many years ago for a Mr. Joshua Shaw.” I told Shamus the Joshua Shaw was my Grandfather and what did he want with magic boots? Shamus then told me a little about my Grandfather. He was a very generous man and helped all that needed help. It was Joshua Shaw that had given Shamus and a couple of his friends work repairing the roof. Shamus knew that Joshua loved hiking and went away for long walking holidays. It was Shamus’s way of saying thank you he had made the boots with magic leather. Whoever wore the boots could walk for miles and miles and not get tired.

Shamus told me that as he stitched the leather he had worked in a magic sender that would tell him where the boots were. It was his way of repaying Joshua Shaw for his kindness. Me putting on the boots had activated the magic sender. I now only wear the boots if I want to go for a long walk. I keep the boots well polished and one day as I myself get older the boots will go back to the attic for any of my heirs to wear if they will. Bern
