The Magic Glass.

The Magic Glass.

In Fairyland an elderly Fairy had been sent back to the original Planet of the Fairies. Over a thousand years she had been on earth helping and seeing that all Fairies had a good schooling. Now it was considered time for her to go back and spend the rest of her many years in retirement. The cottage that the elderly Fairy had inhabited for so many years was now empty. Leprechauns were called in to clean and redecorate the cottage. First of all they emptied everything from the building all carefully stacked next to a tree. The next Fairy cottage owner could decide if she or he wanted any of the odd furniture.

The Leprechauns are quick and efficient workers and the cottage was soon ready for the new owner. One of the Fairy school teachers asked if she could take over the cottage s it was quite close to the school. Her wish was granted and she with the help of the Leprechauns moved her own belongings in the cottage. No, she did not want anything from the previous owner and for a week or two the old belongings of the Fairy that had been sent back home to the Fairies original planet were left next to the tree.

One day a couple of Fairy boys rummaged through what was left over. One of them found a glass. The glass was more of a drinking goblet and had strange markings worked into the glass. On a sudden urge the Fairy boy threw the glass at a tree. The glass bounced off of the tree but did not break. The boy took the glass with him to show his friends. He was somehow proud to have found a glass that did not break when one threw it at a tree or dropped it on to hard ground. The boys played with it for a while then lost interest one of the boys carelessly threw the glass at the old oak in the clearing where I take my nap.

I had finished my garden work and went to the clearing and I saw the glass or goblet. It was now of course dirty and I decided to take it home with me to give it a good wash. After my twenty minute nap I went back home taking the glass with me. In my kitchen sink I washed the glass or goblet under the running water. I was amazed at how clear the markings were. The goblet was indeed a most beautiful object. I decided to take it to Queen Feeanna to see if she knew who the owner was. I could not believe that anyone would throw such a valuable object away.

On my next walk in the woods of Fairyland I took the goblet with me carefully wrapped up in a couple of tea towels. I had hardly reached the clearing when the now familiar bright blue flash and puff of smoke showed the arrival of Her Majesty. Greeting Her Majesty with my best bow I un-wrapped the glass or goblet and showed it to the Queen. Her Majesty looked at the goblet and with her finger she traced the lines that shone so brightly from the glass.

Mr. Shaw this goblet was made many years ago it is a self filling glass whatever one fills into the glass it will continue to refill itself with the same liquid one must wash the glass with clean fresh water and one can then put another liquid to drink and it too will refill the empty glass. The glass was given as a prize for the best poem written by a Fairy. I cannot remember who won the prize all I know is that the goblet has been classed as missing for some thousand years. The goblet by the way is unbreakable it will last for as long as the world exists. I then asked Her Majesty what I should do with such a valuable goblet. Her Majesty suggested that I keep it and use it to replenish any drinks that I might fancy. I had another idea. "Your Majesty why do we not have another poetry competition it would be great to see how well this generation can put a poem together." "So be it Mr. Shaw; Leave it to me and I will arrange a poetry competition. I had one small point to make and asked Her Majesty to make it a rhyming poetry completion then the Fairies would have not only to use their brains to find words that rhyme but also their imaginations." I also suggested that the poems be about the Fairies future.

The Fairies were given two weeks to make a poem on the future of the Fairies and the poem had to rhyme. Many came to me asking for help with words to make the poems rhyme. I told all who came for help that this was an exceptional prize and I could not help any of them. The Fairies were busy in their spare time all had small pieces of paper and wrote things down. It was all very secret. The great day arrived and Her Majesty and I waiting to read each poem.

I must admit some of the poems were very good and these I put on one side for a second reading. Then Her Majesty gave a small cry and said, "This poetry competition is at an end. One of you has used magic to see into the future and all of you know that is forbidden. Waving her magic wand Her Majesty called out, "all of you will wipe this competition from your minds it is now as if nothing was written." Her Majesty gave me the goblet and asked me to hide it where it could not be found. Taking the goblet home with me I mixed a bucket full of concrete and placing the glass in the middle of the concrete I watched and waited until the concrete had set hard. Then I went into Fairyland with my wheelbarrow in which was the concrete block. The concrete block I buried somewhere on Dartford Heath or Fairyland. I defy anyone to find it even if they dig up the whole of the Heath.
